The state of Guanajuato has high potential to lead in sustainability issues

Guanajuato, located in the Bajío region of Mexico, has the potential to become a leading state in the implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria, boosted mainly by the increased relocation of companies in the region, according to Adriana Pulido, sustainability expert and director of Ilunka.

For this year 2025, the state of Guanajuato has a Foreign Direct Investment forecast of 1.1 billion dollars and 20 investment projects, both national and foreign: United States, China, Japan, Italy, Germany and Denmark, which would generate 7,000 jobs in the state.

Companies in sectors such as automotive, aeronautics, pharmaceuticals and plastics will have the opportunity to stand out on the global stage by adopting sustainable strategies that will allow them to attract more investment, as well as improve their competitiveness in processes such as supply, customer service, cybersecurity, talent and emissions reduction, explained the specialist.

In addition, Guanajuato has the challenge of linking 10,000 micro, small and medium-sized companies to the supply chains of  transnational companies, adopting strategies that favor respect for the environment and social responsibility.

“The industry in Guanajuato is going through a transition period and it is from this 2025 that it will have to adapt to the new regulations, so implementing an ESG model will help companies to consolidate as pillars of development,” she said.

The practice of ESG strategies responds to the increase in demand for environmentally friendly production, the creation of new regulations and obligatory standards, and the requirements of international investors, who are looking for allies with global standards.

“Industries such as automotive, construction or manufacturing are responsible for producing much of the CO2 emissions in the country,” she concluded.
