Guanajuato Strengthens Its Industrial Leadership Through Energy Stability and a Firm Commitment to Clean Power

Guanajuato is reaffirming its position as a highly competitive destination for national and international investment, supported by strong energy conditions that ensure the supply required by global companies and reinforce the state’s industrial growth.

According to the Guanajuato State Secretariat of Economy, the state currently reports an energy generation surplus, with an annual production capacity of 17,958 gigawatt-hours, compared to an estimated consumption of 16,000 gigawatt-hours. This represents a strategic advantage that helps guarantee operational continuity, support industrial expansion, and attract new investment projects.

In addition, Guanajuato has an installed capacity of more than 3,392 megawatts, sufficient to meet a peak demand of 2,500 megawatts. This favorable scenario places the state in a position of energy stability—an essential factor for enhancing competitiveness and meeting the needs of high-demand industries such as automotive, aerospace, home appliances, logistics, and advanced manufacturing.

The Secretariat of Economy emphasized that energy availability has become one of the most decisive factors in corporate investment decisions. Today, global companies not only consider a strategic location and access to skilled talent; they also require reliable infrastructure, sufficient power supply, and an increasing share of clean energy—areas in which Guanajuato has achieved solid progress.

As part of its energy transition strategy, Guanajuato continues moving toward a more sustainable and competitive model. Currently, 25% of the energy produced in the state comes from renewable sources, positioning Guanajuato as the fourth-ranked state nationwide in distributed generation.

Furthermore, the state government plans to increase the share of renewable energy from 24% to 38%, under a framework designed to strengthen public generation while also creating significant opportunities for private and mixed investment.

As part of this strategy, the Secretariat reported a portfolio of 12 power generation projects, which together would add a projected capacity of 1,692.5 megawatts and represent an estimated investment of US$1.821 billion.

Among the most notable projects is the El Toro Photovoltaic Power Plant, located in the municipality of Manuel Doblado, which is set to begin construction this year and is expected to enter operations in 2027, further expanding the region’s clean energy generation capacity.

In addition, a geothermal power plant in Celaya, linked to Grupo Carso, is also included in the pipeline, with an estimated capacity of 50 megawatts and an investment of nearly US$80 million, reflecting strong private-sector confidence in Guanajuato’s energy potential.

The Secretariat identified three key energy challenges moving forward: accelerating the transition to clean energy, strengthening distributed generation, and addressing congestion in electrical nodes, in order to ensure that industrial growth continues to be supported by sufficient, modern, and sustainable infrastructure.

With these indicators and projects underway, Guanajuato continues to position itself as a state with the capacity to meet the energy demands of the global economy, offering certainty, competitiveness, and a forward-looking vision grounded in sustainable development.
