Canada: The strategic ally fueling Guanajuato’s export expansion

Canada has moved well beyond its former role as an alternative market for diversification, becoming Guanajuato’s second-largest trading partner and firmly establishing itself behind the United States.

This growing economic importance is reflected in record-breaking trade figures and a comprehensive internationalization strategy spearheaded by the Coordination Office for the Promotion of Foreign Trade (COFOCE).

Key Figures in the Trade Boom (2025–2026)

  • Historic Surge in 2025: Guanajuato’s exports to Canada reached a record $5.335 billion, accounting for 13.2% of the state’s total exports.
  • Remarkable Growth: This represents a 55.7% year-over-year increase, surpassing 2024 export levels by more than $1.9 billion.
  • Continued Growth in 2026: The positive trend has continued into the current year, with shipments to Canada registering approximately 17% growth compared with the same period last year.

Strategic Sectors and Market Presence

Guanajuato’s presence in the Canadian market highlights the strength, competitiveness, and diversity of its local industries, which have successfully responded to international demand:

  • Automotive parts: A cornerstone of bilateral trade and a key technological sector.
  • Agri-food products and Supplies: High-demand agricultural products and essential industrial inputs.
  • Footwear, Hats, and Handicrafts: Distinctive products that bring Guanajuato’s rich traditions, design, and cultural identity to the North American market.

Strategy and Vision for the Future

Guided by a strategy of diversifying international markets while maintaining strong ties with the United States, its primary trading partner, the state government and COFOCE have stepped up their international trade promotion efforts. Luis Antonio Vargas Zavala, General Director of COFOCE, emphasized that active participation in international trade shows and the targeted engagement of Canadian buyers—including initiatives such as the launch of Marca Guanajuato Internacional—are critical to consolidating this progress.

Furthermore, this bilateral relationship extends well beyond commercial transactions. Canadian investment in the region is helping integrate local and regional businesses of all sizes into global supply chains, contributing to broader economic development and creating employment opportunities throughout Guanajuato.
